Pathophysiology & Etiology

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency is a syndrome of maldigestion caused by an insufficient synthesis and secretion of digestive enzymes from the acinar cells of the pancreas.

Clinical Signs & Diagnosis

The clinical signs of EPI are a direct result of maldigestion. A specific blood test is the gold standard for diagnosis.

Treatment & Management

Management is centered on lifelong enzyme replacement, dietary modification, and supplementation of cobalamin (Vitamin B12).

Monitoring & Prognosis

With appropriate management, the prognosis for EPI is generally good.
